There are some nasty little people out there who enjoy creating big nasty viruses just because they can. They don't care if you lose everything on your computer, all they care about is writing their little program. Infecting a popular download that probably is pirated and then kicking back and watching the message boards light up with chaos they have created.
Do yourself a favor. Install protection and stop them in their tracks. Even with protection be wary of the sites you go to and even more cautious of what you are downloading. Most protection these days can scan files while they are being downloaded. Take the extra step and scan the file after the download is complete. If the file is Zipped, scan it again after it is unzipped. An extra minute or two could save you a lot of problems. Don't hook up without protection.
